What is PEMF Therapy?

Pulsed Electromagnetic Field (PEMF) therapy is a non-invasive treatment modality that utilizes electromagnetic waves to deliver pulsating energy to the body. It has gained attention in recent years for its potential health benefits and therapeutic applications.

PEMF therapy involves the use of a device that generates electromagnetic fields of varying frequencies and intensities. These fields penetrate the body and interact with cells, tissues, and organs. The electromagnetic pulses are thought to stimulate cellular activity and promote various physiological processes.

One of the primary mechanisms behind PEMF therapy is the concept of resonance. Each cell in the body has its own natural frequency, and when exposed to an external electromagnetic field that matches or is in harmony with its frequency, the cell may respond by absorbing and utilizing the energy. This resonance effect is believed to enhance cellular function and promote healing.

PEMF therapy has been studied and used for a wide range of conditions, including pain management, inflammation reduction, bone healing, wound healing, improved circulation, and enhanced recovery from injuries. It is believed to have the potential to improve cellular metabolism, increase oxygenation, modulate inflammation, and support overall wellness.

What PEMF machine is used at DHHC?

We use a PEMF machine called the HUGO Pro. The HUGO Pro can be used in a multitude of ways:

  1. Can lay on a single mat
  2. Can lay between two mats to double the magnitude of the pulsing magnetic field
  3. Use a coiled wire around a directed body part
  4. Use one or two wands over a directed part or two different parts at once
  5. Can lay on one mat and then use a wand to hit your whole body and then a specific spot at twice the intensity
  6. PEMF is also used within our HOCATT wellness pod

How long is a PEMF session?

A lot of other PEMF devices that are low intensity may take up to an hour and a half. However, the HUGO Pro PEMF machine is a high intensity PEMF machine. This means it is higher energy and creates larger magnetic fields which makes it more effective in a shorter period of time. In addition, it has the capability to treat the entire body at once rather than just targeting one area like most other devices. All together, it only takes 12 minutes for a PEMF therapy session with HUGO. Sessions do not go over 12 minutes because this may overstimulate and negate the beneficial effects.

What does it feel like?

During a PEMF Therapy session, magnetic fields are pulsed through your body. At low intensities, you will not feel it at all. As the intensity is turned up, you will slowly start to feel your muscles twitching in synchrony with the pulses. It is even normal to feel them contract strongly as long as you are comfortable with it. Someone will be with you at all times manually adjusting the intensity to your liking.

What are the benefits of PEMF?

  1. Enhanced Collagen Production: Collagen is a protein responsible for maintaining the elasticity and firmness of the skin. PEMF therapy has been suggested to stimulate collagen synthesis, which may help improve skin texture, reduce the appearance of wrinkles, and promote a more youthful complexion.
  2. Increased Circulation: PEMF therapy has shown the ability to enhance blood flow and improve microcirculation. This increased circulation can deliver more oxygen and nutrients to the skin cells, promoting cellular rejuvenation and aiding in the removal of toxins. Improved circulation can contribute to a healthier, more radiant complexion.
  3. Anti-Inflammatory Effects: Chronic inflammation can contribute to skin aging and various skin conditions. PEMF therapy has been shown to have anti-inflammatory effects, potentially reducing redness, swelling, and irritation. By calming inflammation, PEMF therapy may support overall skin health and slow down the aging process.
  4. Accelerated Wound Healing: PEMF therapy has been utilized in wound healing due to its ability to promote cellular regeneration and tissue repair. When applied to the skin, PEMF may aid in the healing of scars, accelerate the recovery from skin injuries, and support a more youthful appearance.
  5. Improved Muscle Function: PEMF therapy has been suggested to promote muscle relaxation, reduce muscle tension, and potentially enhance muscle recovery. It may help reduce muscle soreness and fatigue, allowing athletes to perform at their best.
  6. Pain Management: PEMF therapy has shown promise in alleviating pain, including musculoskeletal discomfort. By targeting the source of pain, it may reduce reliance on pain medications and provide athletes with a drug-free alternative for managing pain associated with training or injuries.
  7. Stress Reduction: Chronic stress can have detrimental effects on the cardiovascular system. PEMF therapy has been shown to have calming effects on the nervous system, potentially reducing stress and promoting relaxation. By managing stress levels, PEMF therapy may indirectly support cardiovascular health.
  8. Modulation of Nerve Function: PEMF therapy may influence nerve cell activity and signal transmission. It is thought to help modulate pain perception by affecting nerve cell communication, potentially reducing pain signals sent to the brain.
  9. Enhancement of Cellular Communication: PEMF therapy has been suggested to influence cellular communication and signaling. This includes immune cells such as macrophages, lymphocytes, and natural killer cells. Improved communication among immune cells may enhance their ability to coordinate immune responses and defend against pathogens.
  10. Stimulation of Cellular Activity: PEMF therapy has shown the potential to increase cellular metabolism and energy production. This may support the optimal functioning of immune cells, enabling them to carry out their immune surveillance, recognition, and response more efficiently.
  11. Sleep Quality: Restorative sleep is crucial for maintaining energy levels. PEMF therapy has been studied for its potential to improve sleep quality and promote deep, restful sleep. By optimizing sleep patterns, PEMF therapy may help individuals wake up feeling more energized and refreshed.
